Jute Mats Are 100% Natural and Compostable
Our microgreen seed mats are made of jute fiber. People often ask “what is jute?” In answer to that question, here are some facts of interest about Jute.
Jute is a fast growing (100 days from planting to harvest) fibrous plant cultivated primarily in India and Bangladesh. It is planted harvested and processed for one thing: it’s fiber. Jute fiber has been used historically to make rope, bags, netting, erosion control products and other textiles. It is an attractive blonde fiber with a slight sheen.
With the advent of “needle punching” technology, non woven uses for jute products expanded, and jute “felt” was born. The process for making non woven jute felt includes taking masses of randomly piled jute fibers, like those seen below, and running them through needle punching machines. The needles and combined with compression cause the fibers to become entangled into a felt like, all natural textile. Jute felt has many uses. It is used in upholstery, for carpet pads, natural shipping padding, erosion control and cultivation.
When jute is used in cultivation, It readily absorbs and maintains moisture that seeds use for germination and growth. Roots easily penetrate through through the fibers. This is what makes it the perfect growing media for microgreen production. It is also used as a base for sod, and is a plantable substrate used for slope stabilization and erosion control. Grass seed can be sowed on top of jute matting, and as it grows through the jute into the earth below, it does it’s work to stop erosion. The jute eventually and gracefully decomposes providing nutrients to the grass as it does so.
As the jute runs through the needle punching equipment, it is rolled into large rolls. From there it can be cut to any desired size. For our micrgreen seed pads, it’s cut tinto convenient 10x 20 sheets that fit perfectly into a 1020 nursery tray. We also offer Jute felt in rolls that measure 9.5 inches by 100 feet, for those growing in troughs.
Using jute pads as a Microgreen substrate makes growing microgreens a very clean process with no soil to splash up onto the
maturing greens. The jute pads stay moist without being overly wet. The microscopic spacing of the fibers provides young Microgreens plenty of oxygen and room for root penetration.
Many customers using our jute pads deliver microgreens live to their customers so that they can harvest their own as needed. This works quite well for chefs in commercial kitchen applications, and for consumers buying microgreens for health reasons. It is also great for home growers to just snip what they need for their recipes and allow the rest to continue growing.
