What can be more frustrating than spending money on your landscape only to have your neighborhood deer population decimate your investment? Not much!
One of my first questions to folks wanting a landscape design is “Do you have a deer problem?” In many cases the answer is yes. The first line of defense, in this case is to try to choose plants that are considered “deer safe.” But in reality, deer will eat what they feel like at any particular time. Many of my Tampa Bay Area customers with deer problems in their neighborhood, resort to deer repellent plants and deer repellent products.
Two of the most effective deer repellent plants are Society Garlic and Rosemary. Deer dislike strongly scented plants and planting these plants in your landscape or garden can help deter deer from eating your landscape plants, specially if you use a protective border using these plants. They also dislike mint.
These herbs are the basis for a popular deer repellent spray called Deer Stopper. Deer stopper has a strong minty smell which dissipates for humans quickly. The spray is safe and organic and will not damage your Tampa Bay landscape or garden plants. Most of my customers prefer this scent over products that contain icky stuff like Coyote urine.
Deer Stopper is a concentrate that you mix in a garden sprayer and apply to your plants. Amazon seems to have the best prices on this product and you can read the reviews too.. Click here:

Pepper based sprays can also be effective, but be sure to apply on windless days or you’ll be crying for sure!
A granular Tampa Bay deer alternative to the concentrated liquid in Deer Stopper is Deer Scram. This organic natural product not only deters neighborhood deer, it also is good for the garden. It contains blood meal, white pepper and garlic and has good lasting effects according to some of my customers. The trick with Deer Scram is to sprinkle a wide swath around the plants you want to protect. The blood meal in the product activates a fear response in the deer and sends them on to other gardens. There is no discernible odor to humans. This product is fairly long lasting in dry weather, and while it’s billed as rain resistant, should be applied regularly during our Tampa Bay Area heavy summer rains.
